World Internet Usage Facts

The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to serve billions of users worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks, of local to global scope, that are linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless and optical networking technologies. The Internet carries a vast range of information resources and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents of the World Wide Web (WWW) and the infrastructure to support email.

    Over the years, usage of the internet both on personal computers, Ipad, Iphones, Android, etc has evolved. This has accelerated new forms of interactions through instant messaging, social networking, blogging, and other forms of internet forums.  As of 2011, more than 2.1 billion people of the world's population of  about 7 billion had access to the internet.


In the ranking of internet users by continent, Asia took the lead accounting for 44% of the internet users while Europe and North America took the second and third positions respectively with 22.7% and 13%. In the countries rank, China took the lead with more than 389 million users, followed by the United States with 245 million users. Nigeria was the only African country to make the top 10 with about 44 million users.
